Information

Transfemoral

At VESALIUS, our goal is to enhance the mobility of individuals with thigh amputations by offering personalized transfemoral prostheses that are both comfortable and aesthetically natural. Our transfemoral prostheses comprise of a socket, knee mechanism, shaft, and footplate.

The socket is crucial for a proper fit and comfortable contact with the amputated limb, which ultimately restores optimal mobility. To create our transfemoral prostheses, we use high-quality materials such as resins, carbon fiber, and fiberglass and choose the right tread based on the patient’s activities. The socket, being the primary point of contact between the amputated limb and the prosthetic limb, is of utmost importance. It must fit accurately to prevent pain and discomfort, and our orthopedic engineers use modern techniques to measure and shape it for retention. We use three retention methods: Active Vacuum, Passive Vacuum, and Pin Lock. Active Vacuum uses a pump to expel air between the socket and silicone sock, maintaining a consistent pressure that prevents volume loss and stump fluctuations. It also protects the skin from damage and enhances proprioception. Passive Vacuum creates a vacuum between the socket and abutment by expelling trapped air during walking. Pin Lock utilizes a pin located at the bottom of the silicone sock to secure the prosthesis socket.

At VESALIUS, we recognize that a well-fitted prosthesis can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with thigh amputations. We are dedicated to providing the best possible solution for each patient’s unique needs.
